Can Watermelon Rind Heal Wounds Faster ?
🍉 Can Watermelon Rind Help Wounds Heal Faster?
A Secondary Student Passion Project
Introduction
Watermelon rind is usually thrown away, but it contains Vitamin C,
citrulline, and antioxidants that may reduce inflammation and support
tissue repair.
Instead of wasting it, I wondered: Could watermelon rind help wounds heal
faster?
Hypothesis
If watermelon rind extract is applied to small wounds, then healing will
be faster than untreated wounds because of its nutrients and
antioxidants.
Method
I tested my idea using minor scratches only and followed these
steps:
- Blended watermelon rind with aloe
vera gel.
- Applied the mixture to scratches once
or twice daily.
- Group A: Treated wounds
Group B: Untreated wounds - Recorded daily changes: redness,
scab formation, and closure.

Observation: Treated wounds healed slightly faster with less redness and swelling.

Conclusion
Watermelon rind extract may help wounds heal a little faster.
This project shows how food waste can be turned into something useful and
encourages exploring natural remedies.
Reflection
- Learned how natural remedies may
support healing.
- Challenges: Controlling wound
conditions is difficult.
- Future: Compare watermelon rind
with honey or pure aloe vera for effectiveness.
Why It Matters
- ♻️ Promotes sustainability by reducing food waste.
