Making Soap from Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is a plant that is well-known for its healing and moisturizing properties. Its gel contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are good for the skin. Making soap from aloe vera gel allows students to explore natural skincare and simple chemistry in a safe and creative way.

Background

Aloe vera gel contains important compounds like aloin, polysaccharides, and vitamins A, C, and E. These help to:

  • Moisturize and soothe the skin

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Promote healing of minor cuts or skin irritation

Using aloe vera in soap makes it gentle, moisturizing, and beneficial for everyday skin care.

Aim and Hypothesis

Aim: To make soap using aloe vera gel and test its effects on skin softness and moisturization.
Hypothesis: Soap made with aloe vera gel will be gentler and more moisturizing than regular soap because of its natural compounds.

Materials

  • Fresh aloe vera leaves or pure aloe gel

  • Glycerin soap base (transparent or white)

  • Microwave-safe bowl or double boiler

  • Soap molds

  • Spoon or spatula

  • Optional: essential oils (e.g., lavender or tea tree)

Method

  1. Extract aloe vera gel from fresh leaves or use store-bought gel.

  2. Cut glycerin soap base into small cubes and melt using a microwave or double boiler.

  3. Add 1–2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel per 100g of soap base. Mix well.

  4. Add essential oils if desired.

  5. Pour the mixture into soap molds carefully.

  6. Let the soap cool and harden for 2–4 hours at room temperature.

  7. Remove soap from molds; it is now ready to use.

Expected Results

  • The soap should be soft, moisturizing, and gentle on the skin.

  • Aloe vera may help reduce dryness or irritation after washing.

Conclusion

Making soap with aloe vera gel is a fun and simple experiment. It shows how natural ingredients can be used to create useful products. Students can also be creative by adding colors, scents, or shapes. This project connects science, nature, and everyday life while teaching basic chemistry and skincare concepts.
